About
Welcome to El Comal y la Olla, a charming culinary gem nestled in the heart of Roma Norte, Ciudad de México. This small but inviting restaurant, located at Córdoba 53, has garnered attention for its delectable menu and warm hospitality. El Comal y la Olla stands out with a focus on traditional Mexican breakfast dishes, capturing the essence of homemade comfort food. As a food reviewer for Foodjoyy, I am thrilled to share my impressions of this delightful establishment.
The heart of the menu lies in its brilliant selection of chilaquiles, a dish that has left a lasting impression on many visitors. From the comments of satisfied diners like Phuong Tran, who raved about the fabulous chilaquiles with a perfect spice kick, to Nicholas Edmunds, who couldn’t resist ordering the Chilaquiles Verde twice during his visit, it's clear that this dish is a must-try. The blend of flavors and the freshness in preparation highlight the culinary craftsmanship that the husband and wife duo put into every plate.
El Comal y la Olla doesn’t stop at just chilaquiles, though. Diners can indulge in dishes like the Enfrijoladas con Chorizo, which Wilbur Chang praised for its flavor-packed chorizo. The affordability of the menu adds to the appeal, making it accessible for anyone looking to enjoy an authentic Mexican breakfast without breaking the bank. For just 260 pesos, guests can savor two dishes along with a refreshing juice and a striking cup of cafe de olla, praised by Anurati Srivastva as "OUTSTANDING." This delightful drink, with its unique blend of spices and coffee, is worth a visit on its own.
Beyond the food, the warm hospitality of the owners shines through. Many visitors have noted their kindness and willingness to make guests feel at home, even offering a friendly chat in English for those still learning Spanish. The inviting atmosphere, complete with both indoor seating and a few cozy outdoor tables, provides the perfect backdrop to enjoy a leisurely breakfast. It is not just a meal; it’s an experience that sets the tone for a wonderful day in Mexico City.
In conclusion, El Comal y la Olla exemplifies the beauty of simplicity in the culinary world. It's a place where hearty breakfasts meet genuine warmth, and the food speaks to the soul. Whether you are a local or just visiting, a stop here promises a memorable taste of authentic Mexican breakfast culture. Don't forget to check their hours—this delightful restaurant shouldn’t be missed!
“ Small restaurant with a short menu, but chilaquiles were fabulous with a good spice kick. Comes with a coffee or juice. The husband & wife (?) owners were very friendly and accommodating, even giving us samples of Mexican coffee. Would love to return and try the other chilaquiles! ”
“ We got the Enfrijoladas con Chorizo and Chilaquiles con Huevo and they were great! The Chorizo was packed with flavor. Prices were also very affordable. Would highly recommend! ”
“ I visited El Comal y la Olla twice during a six day trip to CDMX. Actually I went three times because I forgot to check the hours and they were closed the first time I tried on a Saturday morning (I was forced to go to Plan B and endure the massive line at Panaderia Rosetta). So definitely check their hours before you go. I got the Chilaquiles Verde both times. I wanted to try something different for my second visit but the chilaquiles was too good and I couldn't NOT get it again. The prices on the front of the menu also include a Mexican coffee and a glass of juice. I think there are a la carte options on the other side of the menu, but the coffee and the juice were great too. Aside from the delicious food, the little restaurant is adorable -- I ate inside both times but there are a few outdoor tables as well. The husband and wife (I think?) who run the place are very friendly and can help in (a little) English and Spanish. Mexico City isn't lacking for delicious food options, but I was happy to repeat at El Comal y la Olla and I will definitely be back the next time I'm in town. ”
“ What a breakfast, easily one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. Our first stop when first arriving in Mexico City from London, craving a hearty and delicious breakfast following a long flight. Absolutely delicious food and the olla coffee was to die for. 260 pesos for coffees, two dishes and a juice each, which is a bargain for the quality. The man serving was very sweet, helpful and welcoming. My girlfriend and I haven’t picked up much Spanish yet but he made a real effort to chat to us and ask questions. Lovely intro to CDMX, unfortunately we hadn’t even got any cash out so we couldn’t tip, but I would strongly recommend visiting. ”
“ The most unbelievably amazing and wholesome cafe in Mexico City! The owners are unbelievably kind and gracious, explaining their menu in English. The cafe de olla is OUTSTANDING, must try. The lady even explained how to make the coffee in English so I can make it back home. I am on a short trip but I have already planned to go here again. This place is super!!! ”
“ Nice little brunch spot! I like that the meal come with coffee, and juice or fruit! Definitely get the Mexican coffee. ”
“ Wow! Such fantastic service. We came here on our first day in Mexico City and continued to come every day. Unbelievably friendly. The food is amazing and the Cafe de Olla is so good. We had something different every day and it was great. Each day the fantastic couple who runs it gave us something new and traditional to try for free. We ate fried bugs (actually very nice) had tarantula mezcal. All very traditional. They gave us so many recommendations for Oaxaca where we were heading next. So friendly, so lovely and the food was absolutely incredible. Excellent value! Thank you so much for making our first days in Mexico so special. ”
“ I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant and its owners! My partner and I visited for breakfast on our first morning in Mexico City, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The food and drinks were unbelievably good! The owners were warm, friendly, and so generous with their time and recommendations for everything we should do in the city. In our hour there, they made us feel like family - please make time to visit this absolute gem! ”
